There is more to Dr. McCalley than dentistry

He plays in a rock band made up entirely of dentists, and hand-paints tiny works of art into the crowns he makes.

He plays in an all-dentist rock band

Novocaine is a San Diego rock band made up entirely of dentists — friends Dr. McCalley met in dental school and never stopped playing with. Their own pitch, and we cannot improve on it: four out of five dentists recommend listening to this band.

They play bars, parties and fundraisers up and down the coast. If you have caught a summer set along the 101, there is a fair chance you have already met your dentist.

And then there are the Tattooths

A Tattooth is what it sounds like: a tiny tattoo on a tooth. Dr. McCalley paints them by hand, in ceramic stain, while a crown is still being made — then the design is fired under the glaze along with the rest of it.

That means the artwork ends up sealed inside the porcelain, where it cannot wear down, stain or be brushed away. Your own enamel is never touched; the design lives on the crown, and lasts exactly as long as the crown does. It is an entirely optional flourish, and the kind of detail that only turns up when the person making your crown thinks of himself as an artist as well as a dentist.
